Let's face it, football isn't exactly the safetest sport in the world and when things go wrong it's important to have insurance. According to USA Today the minimum wage in 2007 for an NFL player was in the region of $285,000. So if you have a really bad injury that causes the end of your career, you could end up losing a lot of future income if you don't have adequate insurance. Even if it does seem expensive, it's not really when you think about it.

In December 2009 it was found that a superior court judge dismissed a claim by a previous football player of University of Georgia who beleived that the school was badly managing the insurance policies which were taken out to protect footballers who are unfortunate enough to suffer injuries which in turn can end their careers.

Decory Bryant used to play cornerback for the Bulldogs and claims that an official at the University didn't complete the forms for the insurance coverage that would have allowed him to receive more than half a million dollars if injuries had happened prior to being given the opportunity to take part in the professional football.

Due to rules set out by NCAA, all athletes are given automatic coverage for catastrophic purposes however there are a number of players who choose to take out $5,000 premiums for extra protection so that they can receive millions of dollars in income.

Bryant suffered the injuries when he was playing against the University of Alabama-Birmingham in October 2003. Unfortunately he suffered a broken neck when two defenders tackled him. Because the NCAA "an arm of the sate" it was declared that it is protected from some civil actions.
