If you are pretty confident that you won't be needing much in the way of health insurance you can look at what's known as high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). Basically it's a bit like car insurance where you can get a discount if you pay a higher amount for the deductible. So with HDHP you can choose to pay a certain amount to go towards any medical treatment. If the medical treatment isn't as expensive as the deductible there isn't any point in making a claim. Therefore saving the insurer money.
If you take out an HDHPs you might need to take out a health savings account (HSA) which will normally have the deductible amount in it. Of course, you could put more into it if you wish and the amount you save is tax free. It can be a bit confusing though because sometimes you have to spend the money in the HSA by the end of the year whilst in other cases the amount can be rolled over. If you don't make a claim in that year you can going to lose the money which is pretty horrific really. So be careful you know what you are getting yourself in for.
It's believed that if you have a small income you are better off choosing a different health plan. Because if you chose a high-detectable plan you might not be able to afford the deductible and therefore go without the medical treatment you really need.
